Do I Need A Permit To Rent A Dumpster In Ocean County?

Dumpster rentals in Ocean County are allowed to be placed on your private property or on public county roads. Keep in mind though that if you are planning to put your dumpster on public roads, you may be required to obtain a permit through Ocean County, or your specific town. If you’re planning for it to go in your driveway, or anywhere else on your property, then you are typically not required to have one. How Do I Get Rid of Recycling and Hazardous Waste in Ocean County NJ?

Ocean County has some rules and regulations when it comes to recycled materials and hazardous waste. Read more about these guidelines below.

Ocean County NJ operates on a single-stream system. This means that any of the allowed recyclables listed below can be mixed together in one bin. All of the materials will be sorted once it arrives at the recycling facility so there is no need to worry. The following are the permitted recyclables in Ocean County:

  • Plastic Bottles (neck smaller than base)

  • Glass Bottles and Jars

  • Aluminum and Tin Cans

  • Cardboard

  • Office Paper and Junk Mail

  • Newspapers, Magazines, and Catalogs

When recycling these items, the Ocean County Department of Solid Waste Management requires you to remove all caps, lids, and pumps, as well as empty all food and liquid.

The following items are not allowed to be recycled in Ocean County despite being commonly confused for recyclable material:

  • Shredded Paper

  • Plastic Bags

  • Yogurt and Other Food Containers

  • Styrofoam

  • Phone Books

  • Paper Towel/Toilet Paper Tubes

Ocean County provides residents with ample ways to recycle hazardous materials. The Ocean County Department of Solid Waste Management specifically outlines what to do with each and every one of the hazardous goods you can’t recycle curbside or through a private company. The items we have listed below are permitted to be recycled at the county’s Northern and Southern Recycling Centers:

The Northern Recycling Center is located at 601 New Hampshire Avenue Lakewood, NJ 08701. They are open Mon-Sat from 7:30 am – 3:00 pm. The Southern Recycling Center is located at 379 Haywood Road Manahawkin, NJ 08050. They are also open Mon-Sat from 7:30 am – 3:00 pm.

How to dispose of other common hazardous materials in Ocean County NJ:

  • Appliances: If your appliance has Freon, you must first contact an appliance dealer to remove Freon from the appliance. Make sure you are issued a receipt for these services. This receipt is required when getting your appliance hauled.

  • Asbestos: You can recycle asbestos material at the Ocean County Landfill Corporation in Manchester Township. Or call us at (732) 366-9355 for assistance.

  • Paint: Residents are able to dispose of up to 20 cans of latex-based paint through Ocean County's Paint Management Program. Empty paint cans can go directly into the dumpster.
