The following items are considered recyclable by Middlesex County and are permitted for curbside pickup through the city recycling service:

  • Aluminum cans

  • Glass bottles and jars

  • Steel cans

  • Plastic Bottles with #1 code or #2 code found on the bottom

  • Newspaper

  • Mixed paper (magazines, office paper, junk mail, cereal boxes)

  • Corrugated cardboard

In Middlesex County, the following items may be recycled but are NOT subject to curbside pickup. The Middlesex County website states that each municipality may have separate curbside programs for these materials or be able to accept them at a specific drop-off center:

  • Leaves

  • Brush

  • Motor oil

  • Textiles

  • Masonry/paving materials (asphalt, block, brick, cinder, and concrete)

  • Rechargeable batteries (Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), and Small Sealed Lead (Pb))

  • Tires

  • Computers, televisions, computer monitors, printers, and fax machines

  • Electronics (washers, dryers, ranges, refrigerators, air conditioners)

Middlesex County has a robust hazardous waste recycling program offering residents about six different drop-off days a year. Check the Middlesex County Hazardous Waste Page for this year's days.

Materials that will be accepted at these events include: Adhesives, Aerosol Cans, Antifreeze, Brake Fluid, Car Batteries, Cleaners, Drain Cleaners, Fire Extinguishers, Flares, Fluorescent Bulbs, Gasoline, Gas/Oil Mix, Kerosene, Lighter Fluid, Mercury, Motor Oil/Filters, Paints, Paint Thinner, Pesticides and Herbicides, Photographic Chemicals, Pool Chemicals, Propane Tanks, Stains and Varnishes, Thermometers, and Thermostats.

A special note about rechargeable, button cell batteries, and asbestos: Rechargeable and button cell batteries are required to be individually bagged and/or have their terminal ends individually taped up. Alkaline batteries are permitted to be disposed of in your normal trash. In terms of asbestos, you must call 732-745-4170 in advance if you are planning on disposing of it.

Items that will not be accepted include: Appliances, Furniture, Electronics, Empty Containers, Explosives and Munitions, Infectious or Medical Waste, Smoke Detectors, and Tires.

Why Choose Sourgum?

Customer service, sustainability, and transparency are at the core of everything we do at Sourgum Waste. We believe the way waste management is currently being handled is obsolete and over-complicated. Waste flows and volumes have changed, and we believe it is time our industry evolved with it. The truth is that most waste management companies have iffy pricing, no proper customer service, and do nothing to offset the large carbon footprint this industry leaves behind. We are doing everything we can to fix these age-old problems. We have a dedicated customer service team to support our customers, and transparent pricing on our website so that you know exactly what you are paying for. The choice seems obvious to us!
